I grew up with a sister 10 years older than myself, who was born deaf. She went to a school where lip reading was taught and I conversed with her this way. She learnt Auslan when she left school. I only ever learnt the alphabet in sign.
I decided to start Auslan classes in Darwin when I saw an advert. I thought it would be good to use with my sister and also her partner, who doesn’t lip read. My sister was very excited when I told her I was learning Auslan. Although, I am still a beginner I now try to practice with my sister on Skype, at least every couple of weeks. We talk about what we have been doing, family, any news and plans we have coming up. She corrects me or if I am unsure of a word she will show me how to sign it.
Although, I have a long way to go I hope to continue learning Auslan so I can converse with other deaf people I may meet and have a better conversation with my sister and her partner.
